The Thing About Journalism...

October 23, 2012

The thing about the journalism world, or the whole world in general, is that everything is so subjective. What one person may think is a great piece could reek havoc in the eyes of another. Often, it becomes difficult to discern what is good and what is bad, what was a well written story vs a poorly written story, what should be said vs what shouldn’t be said. It is all up in the air and open for debate.

But regardless of all of the factors that go into forming an opinion about a piece, I know one thing about journalism that is not debatable, and that is, it is about telling the truth.

Telling the truth and getting the word out there about what is going on; informing people. So no matter how many “you’re a great writer” lines I get or no matter how many “you should quit now” lines I get, I know that my job is to tell a story by telling the truth.

Whether some people think it’s bad or good doesn’t matter in the long run because at the end of the day if I know how to take words and put them side-by-side in a sentence that makes sense and tells the truth then I’ve done by job, and I’ve done it well.

I can get praised or beaten up on, but as long as I did my job and I am confident in my work, I have no problem sleeping at night.
