This Lullaby

It’s book review time!

I have been reading so much lately; it has been wonderful. I kind of surprised myself at this last one. I’m not normally one to read romance novels or cheesy chick flick books, but my friend suggested this one to me. I trusted her taste in books and read it.

It’s called This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen. On a scale of one to Harry Potter it was about a five. And considering the brilliance of Harry Potter, five is a decent score. The book kept me captivated and intruiged and had a solid basic story line. While I could somewhat predict the end, it was still fun to read the little bits and pieces and proverbs in between.

It is a love story of sorts, but is one of those feel good books that reminds you everything is going to be okay in the end. I don’t normally read happy books, but I must say it was a nice change of pace and put a smile on my face at the end.

The novel is about a young girl and her summer right before college. Narrated in first person, the novel documents the love and trials of both Remy (the protagonist) and her multi-divorced mother. I think the reason I connected with the story so much is that Remy wasn’t a ditsy little princess (to be kind) but was a real girl, who like me, has an extremely pessimistic view on love and the dating world. The supporting characters all felt like real people I would be in class with or meet around town. It was a relatable storyline and was also realistic.

The only criticism I have is the book’s inability to have a great sense of flow. It seemed choppy at points and lacked continuity at times too. I think this was due to the style of writing that I am simply not used to.

While the book definitely wasn’t a life changer, I have to say it was a good read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something lighthearted to pick up!

So there you go! This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen
