Who we really are...

I had a lovely impromptu chat with some wise friends today. The conversation spurted out of absolutely no where, but definitely made me think.

As we grow and age we are constantly developing into who we truly are. We begin to realize certain personality traits about ourselves they aren't just specific to a certain stage in our life, but truly make up who we are as people. The same goes for interests and pet peeves and lifestyles. We are constantly discovering little bits and bobs about ourselves.

The important umbrella idea during this growing stage is figuring out who we really are aside from the physicality's of this world.

I could describe myself as a redheaded coffee drinker who goes to college, has a job, maintains a blog, loves to dance and prizes her laptop. But those are all physical things about who I am. And while these physical things can hint at the person I am at my core, they don't (rather shouldn't) define who I am.

Who each and every one of us truly is lies with the person we are without those items. When we find that person we then are able to add in those physical things without letting them take over us.

I am not a student. I am not a coffee drinker. I am not a dancer. I am a woman with a fiery passion to do things and an entire library's worth of words in my head. Right now I'm only 20 and I'm sure I will discover even more things about myself for the rest of my life.

But I suppose we are all searching for what it is that makes us who we are, and what makes us different from that other coffee drinking, hard working college student sitting over there.
